About DEEDA

DANIELA KON

DIRECTOR / PRODUCER / DP / CONSULTANT

Kon is an independent journalist, consultant and award-winning documentary filmmaker who is driven by the subversive potential of social impact documentary, a genre that makes the obvious unfamiliar and animates an understanding of the subjective underlying structures that make up social and ideological realities.

Kon has worked with humanitarian organizations in India, Thailand, Bangladesh, Liberia, Senegal and Cambodia since 2005 – filming in schools, orphanages, rural villages, non-profit sites and regions of extreme poverty, producing documentaries and videos that highlight global inequities, accomplishments of aid organizations, the moral complexity of development work and the personal and political boundaries of sustainability.

Dedicated to merging film and philanthropy, Kon’s debut feature documentary ‘Changing the World on Vacation – NGO’s and the Politics of Compassion’ explores the potholes that stand in the way of doing aid work responsibly and raises crucial questions about the nature of giving and each individual’s potential to be an activist for change. Awarded Best International Documentary at the British Film festival Los Angeles 2009, the documentary is made available for audiences and educational institutions world-wide.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Kon moved to London in 1999 completing her BA in Media and Cultural Studies and MA in Documentary Production at the University of London. In 2003 she worked as a production assistant for Killer Films in New York. In 2004/2005 she was the researcher and assistant editor on “Protocols of Zion,” an Official Sundance Selection for Blowback Productions, director Marc Levin’s NYC production company. She founded Deeda Productions in 2006 and has worked in the development sector ever since.
